Microsoft Reportedly Developing Translucent Aluminum Smartwatch

Samsung, LG, Sony, and Apple aren't the only major companies working on smartwatches, according to The Verge, Microsoft's Surface team is currently prototyping a new wearable computer of its own. The purported device is said to be running a modified version of Windows 8 and is intended for close integration with the company's other devices.

A previous report by AmongTech claims that the smartwatch will be available with interchangable wrist bands in a variety of colors and that the unit's housing will allegedly be made of Oxynitride Aluminium, which is said to be an 80-percent transparent material that is four times harder than glass.

Unlike devices like the Pebble and Sony's existing SmartWatch line, Microsoft's offering will not require a smartphone for full functionality. Instead, the device will reportedly be equipped with an LTE radio and 6GB of on-board storage.

Additional specifications and details regarding the purported device's launch window are still unknown, although AmongTech expects the smartwatch to be officially revealed late next year.
