Comic-Con: DC Comics' Trinity War Panel Recap

DC Comics held a panel on Friday at Comic-Con to give the lowdown on the upcoming Trinity War event that would be enveloping all the Justice League titles. Writers Ray Fawkes, Jeff Lemire, and Geoff Johns were on hand to discuss the war and where it would take the characters of the New 52.

To kick things off a video rolled explaining the Justice League titles and their relationships. “A hero crosses a line and another hero ends up dead,” Johns’ narration said. The video name checked the rosters of each title and how the event has been seeded over the past year.

The panel pointed out that this was the first big event of the New 52. “We always knew we were coming to some story points with Pandora would come to a head, but it was Jeff Lemire who suggested me make it a Justice League story,” Johns said. “We talked about, how could the villains exploit the Justice League? And we thought that it would start with these villains setting up so the heroes to lose faith in Superman.”

Ray Fawkes talked briefly about the Trinity of Sin: Pandora title. “She has been presented with an opportunity to end all the evil in the world.” The audience was then shown artwork that featured Pandora going up against Vandal Savage. Fawkes noted that theories about Pandora being behind the birth of the New 52 would be addressed after Trinity War. "It'll come into play," Fawkes said.

“Constantine is the kinda guy who thinks five steps ahead. You’ll see in issue five, he tries to take Shazam out of play,” Fawkes said of his other monthly title. Constantine is set to play a major role in the upcoming event. “His superpower is that he can’t be corrupted because he’s already so corrupt,” Lemire joked.

Next up was Forever Evil, a villain focused series launching in September. “Not everybody wants to rule the world, some villains like the Justice League at the top of the food chain because it keeps things simple,” Johns said. He noted Lex Luthor was essentially the center character of the series. “There is a big twist to it all that Jeff and I haven’t spoiled yet.”

Speaking on the events of Justice League #22, Lemire said, “It’s really a story about corruption.” He said that the Justice Leagues would see radical changes and there would be new teams by the end of the event. The events of the book would draw major lines amongst the heroes, even characters on the same teams.

Initially, Johns and Lemire had a much larger cast planned and were forced to cut down the list. “We wanted everybody, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, everybody,” Lemire said. The panel noted that the events of Trinity War would effect many of the DC titles, not just the Justice League books.

“Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman have a lot of tension as the series progresses,” Johns said. He joked that Wonder Woman may have had a relationship with Superman behind Trevor’s back, but he built a whole Justice League to fight her and her friends. Lemire pointed out that Frankenstein quickly aligns with Wonder Woman and that she would be a driving force in the series because of the respect she demands from other characters. Interior pages from Justice League Dark were displayed and they all heavily featured the heroes from the main Justice League title.

“We are really going to take this to the next level. This is really the next phase of the New 52,” Johns said.
