Basement Crawl: PlayStation 4’s Spy vs. Spy

Bloober Team is a Polish developer that’s been toiling away on various platforms for several years. A-Men, it’s PlayStation Vita game, is probably its best-known project, and today, we’re allowed to reveal more about the studio’s maiden PlayStation 4 project called Basement Crawl.

The greatest inspirations for Basement Crawl, Bloober Team’s Peter Bielatowicz told me, are two classic games in particular: Bomberman and Spy vs. Spy. Basement Crawl is a “maze-based action game” where the idea is to decimate other players. In short, as you traverse the game’s various map, you’ll have to set traps to catch, hurt, and eliminate other players.

While Bloober Team declined to give us assets for the game apart from the artwork embedded in this article, the game can best be described as 2.5D. And Bielatowicz promises that even if there might be a leveling or progression system in the game, that it’s entirely skill-based, to “focus on hardcore players instead of casuals or middlecore.”

Players just starting out in Basement Crawl will have four character classes available to them at the start, each with skills, strengths, and weaknesses “balanced carefully against each other.” Basement Crawl will support up to four players locally and eight players online, or any combination therein.

Basement Crawl is currently slated as a “launch window” game. Whether or not it will be available precisely at launch remains to be seen. However, we hope to have more on Basement Crawl in the coming months, including a look at gameplay and, ultimately, a full review.
