Comic-Con: Superman in the New 52 Panel Recap

A panel of current Superman creators gathered early Sunday at this year’s Comic-Con to discuss the Man of Steel’s role in the New 52 and beyond. Jim Lee, Scott Lobdell, Michael Alan Nelson, Eddie Berganze and Scott Snyder were on hand to talk about their current titles and what fans could expect in the upcoming months.

“Thank you guys for supporting this title. I've wanted to do a Superman story for a very long time,” Snyder said of Superman: Unchained. He told the audience that in the upcoming third issue of the series readers would see Superman get thoroughly thrashed. “He gets really owned, with a P!” Lee added.

Snyder said that Superman is emotionally torn apart, as well. Lee went on to say that Superman would literally be punched and kicked across the United States. “We really want to do a story that takes Superman to task in every way,” Snyder said. He promised that Superman would be punched harder than he had ever been punched. “And bicycle kicked harder,” Lee laughed.

On the topic of the upcoming Superman/Wonder Woman #1 comic, Eddie Berganza said the series was the furthest thing from a romance comic possible. The series is set to be filled with action and adventure as opposed to quieter moments. "They try to have dates, but it never goes well," Berganza laughed. The first issue of the new series launches in October.

Scott Lobdell then spoke on the Action Comics and Superman titles. “It’s all about momentum between the two books,” he said. He told the audience that Lee’s art caused him to produce better stories and more exciting issues because he felt he had to compete with Lee and Snyder’s book. His goal in two series was to have more fun and embrace some of the character’s sillier aspects.

“There’s just so much happening in Superman, we can’t contain it to 20 pages a month,” Lobdell continued. “In the next two or three months, when we get to issue #25, you’ll see that the Superman Universe will not be the same.”

In Action Comics Annual #2, a story called Krypton Returns starts. Fans can expect time travel and more with the character H’el. There would be large repercussions in Krypton’s past and major waves in the Superman family of titles.

Superman/Batman was up next and Berganza said that fans of Superman and Batman brawls would be very happy with the upcoming issues. Earth 2 would be heavily featured in the series and readers can expect their perceptions of the alternate universe to be toyed with. “You’ll even get Superman Vs Superman and Batman Vs Batman! There’s punching with a lot of heart. That's what we try to do at DC. Punching with heart.”

“I wanted to explore how Supergirl fights her own past and realizes she’s her own worst enemy, sometimes literally,“ Nelson said of the new Supergirl arc. He noted that Cyborg Superman would play a large role and that readers could expect a very different interpretation of the character in the New 52.

A young fan then asked if the New 52 Superman ever smiled and Snyder answered, “Superman is a symbol of hope, so after he is done getting knocked down you will see him get up and you will see him smile, I promise.”
