Harrison Ford received a round of applause for his words regarding Ender’s Game author Orson Scott Card this week.
Card has been vocal in his opposition to gay marriage, and Ford addressed the issue during a press conference at Comic-Con.
“I believe that none of Mr Card’s concerns regarding the issue of gay marriage are part of the thematics of this film” he stated. “He has written something that is of value to us all regarding moral responsibility. I think his views outside of those that we deal with in this film are not an issue for me to deal with, so I really have no opinion on that issue.
“I am aware of his statements admitting that the question of gay marriage is a battle he lost. He admits that he lost. I think we all know that we’ve all won. That humanity has won. And that’s the end of the story."
Ford also said that there was no similarities between his character Colonel Graff – who trains youngster Ender Wiggins for warfare in the film – and Han Solo.
“They are nothing alike. Graff’s a very complex character charged with an awesome responsibility, who recruits and trains young Ender Wiggins, and who faces a lot of moral issues involving using young people for warfare. And the complex moral issues are part of Graff’s story. Ender doesn’t face issues of morality until the end of the film, when he knows what’s happening. But Graff is aware of his moral responsibilities all through his part of the story.
“The book deals with a lot of very complex issues of social responsibility and the moral issues that one faces when one is part of the military establishment. I think Graff is a much more complex character than Han Solo.”
And with a laugh, he added “That doesn’t mean that I regret Han Solo.”
Ender’s Game hits screens this October.
