Comic-Con: Beware the Batman Creators Explain Their New Take On The Familiar Franchise

Beware the Batman recently premiered on the DC Nation block, and it presents a new take on the superhero. Voice actors Anthony Ruivivar (Batman) and J.B. Blanc (Alfred) joined producers Glen Murakami and Mitch Watson at Comic-Con to screen a new episode and talk about the new perspective on the character.

The episode they screened, “Broken,” explored the beginnings of the Humpty Dumpty story and Batman's first encounter with the character. They want to put a fresh spin on all of the characters they bring into the series, and this episode was a shining example. Their Humpty Dumpty is maniacal and scary and his voice will give you chills. The episode also showcased the series' sleek CGI style and noir-like vibe.

Glen Murakami said they were going for that look. “Real early on, we made a decision not to do deco, not to do Gothic and to push to go more modern.” They wanted to light it like a film and make it more modern and more cinematic. It definitely sets the series apart from past iterations.

Batman is still relatively young in this series, and Anthony Ruivivar said that alone puts him in another place mentally. “He's not the jaded, indestructible, gruff Batman later on... he's figuring out where he belongs and his own history.” He's got a razor-sharp mind. His relationship with Alfred ventures into new territory as well since Alfred has history as a member of MI-6. J.B. Blanc stated, “The truth about Alfred is yeah, he's different, but the relationship between him and Bruce is very fundamentally true to the franchise.”

The hero is facing down villains from the rogue's gallery who we don't often see. That's deliberate. Mitch Watson said, We have particular story lines we wanted to tell with Batman, with Alfred, with Katana and soon with Barbara Gordon – we wanted to find villains that would highlight whatever was going on in with characters in the episode.” He and Murakami looked through the entire history of the character to choose villains that would fit what they had in mind. Murakami said working with other villains is shedding new light on Batman.

However, Watson did say there will be a familiar villain in the second half of the season voiced by a fairly well known actor. All he would say is the villain has the letter “d” in his name. Adam Baldwin will be appearing as Metamorpho, and Sapphire Stagg will be entering the series as voiced by Emmanuelle Chriqui.

Check out Beware the Batman in the DC Nation block on Cartoon Network on Saturdays at 10am.
