Comic-Con: Vin Diesel Previews Footage From Riddick

Writer-director David Twohy and stars Vin Diesel and Katee Sackhoff were at San Diego Comic-Con today to present fans with an exclusive look at Universal's forthcoming sci-fi action sequel Riddick.

Following 2000’s Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, Riddick follows the titular, escaped convict antihero (Diesel) wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. He's been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless.  Soon, however, Riddick finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered.

The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.  The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal.  With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy. The cast includes Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Matt Nable, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine, and Raoul Trujillo.

Diesel said that he and Twohy hashed out the story for a third film at Diesel's house where they tried to deepen the mythology of Chronicles of Riddick while also keeping the character-driven element and style of Pitch Black. He credits being a player of Dungeons & Dragons with helping him understand how to hash out the story and develop mythology. He also said Riddick is essentially a man in search of his identity.

Diesel said he's a little unnerved by the inner darkness of his character, especially now that he has kids. He also said the toughest and most taxing part of filming fight scenes is the emotional component of them. Sackhoff said what she liked about her character is her less than vulnerable nature and the certain kinship she shares with Riddick, and that she got to shoot big guns.

Footage-wise, they showed essentially an extended version of the red band trailer, but this one shows the pretty gruesome demise of one of the movie's more notable cast members. It's a hell of a kill so we won't spoil it for you. (UPDATED: Universal Pictures has released the red band, NSFW footage online, which you can watch below!)

Riddick opens stateside September 6.
