Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Iain De Caestecker on Agent Leo Fitz

While he's had notable parts in UK series, it's safe to say Iain De Caestecker is a new face to most American viewers. But that will change soon thanks to his role in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. De Caestecker plays Agent Leo Fitz, who provides the team's tech support, alongside Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons.

I spoke to De Caestecker about his role on the series and working with Joss Whedon on the Marvel TV spinoff.

IGN: What can you tell us about Leo Fitz?

De Caestecker: My character, he’s Engineering, so he’s on the computer and tech side of everything. He’s consumed within that world, and he works very closely with Simmons, who’s Biochem. They’ve got this kind of weird chemistry together, and they just kind of fit each other in a very weird way. So everyone on the team has got their own specific thing that they do and their own positives and negatives. It just kind of works in that way.

IGN: These are normal people in a world where superheroes are walking around. How do you think your character is reacting to that?

De Caestecker: I don’t know. I think you’d look at it how you’d react to normal life, things like that. On the one hand, if you saw something like that in real life, you probably wouldn’t really believe it at first. And then it would start to become real, and then maybe you’d become a bit more attuned to it. I don’t know if you could become very comfortable with it, or that it’s just a normal thing. But yeah, it’s within that kind of world, and it’s fresh after the Avengers movie, so that world’s still tied into it.

IGN: What does your character make of Agent Coulson, who’s obviously been around these superpowered guys a lot more?

De Caestecker: I think everyone on the whole team just looks up to him. I think he’s the boss, and we know that from the start. He’s kind of got that aura about him as well. And Clark [Gregg] kind of has that, too, this kind of thing when he comes in, and everyone really respects him instantly. He’s got that way about him generally.

IGN: What’s it like working with Joss Whedon, coming off The Avengers?

De Caestecker: It’s the coolest thing ever. The thing is, he has a lot more to think about as well, much more than we do. He’s the first one to come on set and start making jokes and having a laugh for a lot longer than we thought you normally would on set. Yeah, he’s brilliant. He’s great.
