The animated sequel Despicable Me 2 dominated the box office both at home and abroad with the toon's worldwide total estimated to be $293.2 million since opening Wednesday. The Universal/Illumination film earned an estimated $82.5 million this weekend alone to top the domestic box office.
Disney's hugely expensive The Lone Ranger is now the third bomb this summer following After Earth and White House Down. The Johnny Depp-Armie Hammer western, from the creative team behind the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean series, earned dismal reviews and came in a weak second place with $29.4 million for the three-day weekend. It's grossed $48.9 million domestically since its July 3rd bow, far below the studio's $65 million estimate. We'll see how it does overseas.
The standup concert pic Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, the least expensive film in the weekend Top 10, has earned $17.5 million since its Wednesday opening.
