Comic Book Reviews for 7/10/13

After nearly two years of build-up, DC Comics' Trinity War has arrived. With the inciting incident occurring in this week's Justice League #22, the fight is on and the crossover is ready to blaze through the summer. This week also marks the next chapter of Batman: Zero Year, a new issue of Superman Unchained, and a whole lot of Gotham City goodness.

At Marvel, we get another dose of Daredevil and Hawkeye along with a very surprising installment of Avengers Academy. And as though that wasn't enough, Valiant Comics' latest, Quantum and Woody, has finally arrived to stellar results. Oh, and seeing as how it's San Diego Comic-Con next week (already! Can you flippin' believe it?), there will be no review round-up!

Join in on the IGN Community reviews!

We also continued to enlist IGN All-Stars to review the weekly Comixology Submit releases -- Comixology's self-publishing platform featuring oodles of great indie comics -- so you should check that out here.

[Note: A review for Star Wars #7 as well as last week's IGN Community Reviews will be added soon.]

Astro City #2

Astro-City_2_Full-665x1024Written by Kurt Busiek | Art by Brent Anderson

"One of the elements I like most about Astro City is how consistently accessible the series is. Kurt Busiek has populated this universe with plenty of characters, but it's rarely difficult to just pick an issue of any given series and just dive right into the fray. Astro City #2 is a perfect example of this. Even if you made the mistake of passing over last month's debut issue, there's no reason not to give this follow-up a look." -Jesse

Batgirl #22

BG_Cv22_hslgmdqtxy_-668x1024Written by Gail Simone | Art by Fernando Pasarin

"Alex Garner's stunning cover for Batgirl #22 shows our eponymous hero quite literally severing her ties with the Bat symbol she no longer feels she deserves. It's fitting then that writer Gail Simone deviates from Barbara Gordon's nocturnal crime-fighting activities to explore another side to her character. In the emotional wreckage left by her sociopathic brother's dastardly deeds and subsequent demise, Babs has been left crushed by an avalanche of self-doubt and guilt. As she begins to take baby steps in her recovery -- allowing herself one night of fun with Ricky, the erstwhile car thief -- we see that not every Gordon is doing as well." -Melissa

Batman #22

Batman_22_Full-665x1024Written by Scott Snyder | Art by Greg Capullo

"Batman #22, by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, brings us the second part of Zero Year, where we see Bruce Wayne as a young man trying to find his place in the world. This Bruce is inexperienced and perhaps even a little bit naive. In some ways, he's astonishingly overconfident, but in others, we see that's he's not as sure of himself or his mission as he wants to believe." -Melissa

Batman '66 #2

batman662Written by Jeff Parker | Art by Jonathan Case

"Batman '66 is the best deal in comics right now. An over-the-top superhero adventure that makes great use of the digital medium and only costs a buck. You can't beat it. This isn't just a goofy tribute to the classic television show, no, Batman '66 is a straight up a great Batman comic book, anyway you cut it. At this price, you'd be a fool to not read this series. A fool, I tell you!" -Ben

Batman L'il Gotham #4

BM_Lil_GOTHAM_4_ak3ow5ed56_-760x1024Written by Dustin Nguyen & Derek Fridolfs | Art by Dustin Nguyen

"Li'l Gotham is proof positive that the world needs more all-ages Batman comics. Is any New 52 comic this consistently great? Even with Batman '66 now cutting in on that turf, Li'l Gotham #4 more than justifies the price of admission with two more holiday-themed tales." -Jesse

Green Lantern Corps #22

GLCOR_Cv22_gnxm17pqam_-674x1024Written by Van Jensen & Robert Venditti | Art by Bernard Chang

"You have to give Van Jensen credit for being so ballsy with Green Lantern Corps -- and it’s only his second issue. He has taken the controversy surrounding the supposed mandate from DC for John Stewart to be killed and run with it, as you can plainly see from the cover. But this title is so much more than a clever wink. After setting its foundation, Jensen and co-plotter Robert Venditti deliver a story that’s rich with mystery and intrigue, not to mention that it’s supported by a slew of new characters who are budding into possible new fan favorites." -Joshua

Justice League #22

Justice-League_22_Full-665x1024Written by Geoff Johns | Art by Ivan Reis

"When you look at it, Trinity War has been brewing since Flashpoint ushered in the New 52 back in 2011. Geoff Johns brings together threads from the past two years involving all three Justice Leagues, Flashpoint, Pandora and the rest of the Trinity of Sin, the Secret Society, and the Shazam backups. It’s highly impressive that Johns makes a cohesive tale out of so many different elements from so many stories, yet aside from Madame Xanadu’s vague vision of a bleak and fiery future, it’s hard to say what the actual conflict is. It’s one heck of a rollercoaster to read, but you’re never quite sure which ride you’re on." -Joshua

Nightwing #22

NTW-Cv22-ds-a158c-665x1024Written by Kyle Higgins | Art by Will Conrad

"In Nightwing #22, writer Kyle Higgins thrusts Dick Grayson deeper into Chicago's messy, corrupt world of lies and intrigue without losing any of the character's trademark charm. Right from the issue's opening page, we see that the odds are most definitely not in Nightwing's favor, as nearly everyone in his life has an agenda that involves bringing him down a notch or two -- even if he doesn't know it yet. Over the past few issues, Higgins hasn't taken the time to really explore Nightwing's personal relationships in his new city, but here we get to see how complicated his life is becoming, both at home and on the job, as his roommates become players in a game they don't fully realize they've been sucked into." -Melissa

Suicide Squad #22

SSquad_cvr_22_clr_7zv3rthyp7_-676x1024Written by Ales Kot | Art by Patrick Zircher

"The downside to having a new writer come on board a New 52 series and reinvigorate it is that inevitably the writer will either make a premature departure or the series will be canceled due to low sales. The former is the case with Suicide Squad, as Ales Kot confirmed he's leaving after issue #23. Rubbing salt on that wound is Suicide Squad #22. This is easily Kot's best issue yet, and now we know it's also the penultimate chapter of his brief run." -Jesse

Superman Unchained #2

Superman_Unchained_2_Full-665x1024Written by Scott Snyder | Art by Jim Lee

"Scott Snyder and Jim Lee continue to deliver the best New 52 Superman story to date as the conflicts with Ascension, the U.S. Military, and good ol' Lex Luthor escalate to dangerous levels for the Man of Steel. Superman’s tightly written inner voice shows us a smart and determined man who never stops looking for the right solution. In the past, we’ve seen Superman achieve countless feats of wonder, but Snyder shows just what goes through his head as he weighs what power he ought to use, which makes you appreciate that it’s not always easy being Superman because selecting the wrong one could have catastrophic results." -Joshua
