AT&T Next Allows You to Get a New Phone Every Year

For some people, getting one smartphone every two years just isn't enough, and considering the constant flow of new devices that we see nowadays, the desire to get the latest gadget can be understandable. On the other hand, buying phones unsubsidized on a yearly basis is an extremely expensive undertaking. Well, AT&T has just announced a new way to help those who feel the need to get smartphones or tablets while they're still fresh with their upcoming AT&T Next plan.

Get a new smartphone or tablet every year with no down payment.

Starting July 26th, new AT&T customers or current subscribers eligible for an upgrade can enroll in the plan and pick up any new smartphone or tablet with no down payment — there will, however, be added monthly installments to cover the purchase. After 12 payments, the subscriber can trade in the device to get a new smartphone or tablet, again, with no upfront costs. If a new device isn't obtained, the subscriber can continue to use their existing unit and the added monthly payments will stop after 20 months.

Monthly installments will range from $15 to $50, depending on the device. As an example, AT&T stated that the added costs for the recently released Samsung Galaxy S4 would be $32 per month.

AT&T's Next somewhat resembles T-Mobile's new Jump program, which lets subscribers upgrade every six months, although an initial down payment is required for the device. Verizon is rumored to be cooking up a similar plan of its own, and with two major US carriers already on board, it's looking more and more likely.
