The Comics Run: July 1, 2013

Hey, comic book world. These are the books I'm super excited for this week. We probably have different opinions, which is why this is the perfect opportunity for you to cruise it on over to the comments and strike up a healthy discussion about this week's most exciting books!

If you want a comprehensive list of everything that’s coming out this week and not just my own picks for what’s hot, check out Diamond’s shipping list.

Batman Incorporated #12 - $2.99

BMINC_Cv12_dsBy Grant Morrison & Chris Burnham | DC

Seven years ago, Grant Morrison began an epic run with the Dark Knight that is set to conclude this summer. Batman Inc #12 serves as the penultimate chapter of his run, as he and artist Chris Burnham have Batman take the fight to Leviathan and her goons, barreling toward the big finale in issue #13.

It’s been a hell of a ride, so here’s hoping Batman Incorporated can stick the landing.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 - $2.99

Pandora1CoverFinal_oqlbmp2q8i_By Ray Fawkes & Daniel Sampere | DC

Pandora has been shrouded in mystery since Flashpoint #5, so it’s a relief that finally, nearly two years later, we’ll be getting more significant insight into her character with this new ongoing series. What’s in Pandora’s Box? How does this all tie-in with the coming Trinity War? Where’d she get those wonderful toys? Hopefully we’ll start getting those answers with Pandora #1.

The supernatural side of the DC Universe has been going pretty strong with the New 52, so with any luck Pandora will continue that tradition.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1 - $2.99

Superior_Foes_of_Spider-Man_Vol_1_1_TextlessBy Nick Spencer & Steve Lieber | Marvel

This book doesn’t interest me so much for its concept of developing a new Sinister Six or the other villains of the new Spider-Man as much as it does for bringing artist Steve Lieber to a monthly superhero book. His story in Hawkeye #7 was a stellar treat, but it was small potatoes compared to doing an ongoing series.

If you’ve never read his creator-owned book with Greg Rucka, the spectacular Whiteout, or his mini-series with Jeff Parker, Underground, please check them out immediately.

Satellite Sam #1 - $3.50

satellitesamnyccBy Matt Fraction & Howard Chaykin | Image

A 1950s noir mystery by Matt Fraction and Howard Chaykin? That amazing cover? I’m not sure there’s an easier sell for me this week. The basic idea here is that the star of a television serial in the 50s is found dead in a seedy place, and though his death seems natural, there’s most definitely more at play.

Fraction and Chaykin explore the sex and violence of the “golden age” of TV in a way that only they can.

Masks and Mobsters Vol. 1 HC - $19.99

Following on the heels of Edison Rex last week, this is the next Monkeybrain Comics title to hit this newfangled print comics medium. Published in hardcover through Image, Masks and Mobsters – nominated as one of IGN’s best digital comics of 2012 – is an anthology-style crime comic about how organized crime deals with the emergence of superheroes.

How does the old school mob deal with a new generation of do-gooders? It’s a series full of great art and clever writing, so make sure you snag it – or grab it digitally on Comixology.
